いよいよ、明日の早朝、Appleの新製品が発表になります。Steve Jobsのプレゼンが見れるだけでも嬉しく思います。「これまでやってきたことの中で最も重要」という表現から考えると、やはり、「新製品が教育市場を主な対象の一つとしていること」を認める発言ではないでしょうか。教育系出版会社大手McGraw-HillのCEOがCNBCのニュース番組で、明日、発表される新製品（タブレットという表現を使っています）がMac OSではなくiPhone OSを基盤としているので、iPhone/iPod touchに最適化された同社のデジタルコンテンツが、新製品でも使用できると、インタビューの最後の方で明言しています。McGraw-Hillのコンテンツの95%がe-bookのフォーマットを採用しているとも。まさか、ここまで答えてくれるとは思っていなかったであろう、キャスターは少し困惑した様子。

対岸の街にあるユニクロに向かう途中、こぐま座流星群のものと思われる大火球を目撃したそうです。車の進行方向である南の空に天頂付近から降って来るようにゆっくりと流れる火球。時刻は12月22日夕方5時半頃。私は車線変更中でミラーで後方を見ていたので、火球は確認していません。ネットで調べると、同時刻に複数の目撃情報があります。

ユニクロで買って来たのは黒いタートルネック、自称XXのSteve Jobsとしてはこのくらいは持っておかないと。帰りに立ち寄ったお店で、Nikon D90で高感度撮影を試してみました。上の写真は絞り優先f/4.2、ISO 1600、SS1/15、手ブレ補正もしっかり効いているみたいです。この程度のISOではノイズを気にすることなく、手持ちで夜間撮影ができそうです。AFも暗くても大丈夫そう。

こぐま座流星群の極大が午後10時頃ということで、早めに帰宅し、カメラの設定を済ませて準備は万端だったのですが、北隣のお宅の玄関にある明るい照明灯が、こんな日に限って点けっぱなしになっています。普段は午後10時頃には消えているのですが。翌日の早朝まで点けっぱなしだったようで、撮影機会を逸してしまいました。空は晴れていたのに残念。

新しいiPod nanoの特徴を紹介するAppleのサイトに"Rock music. Roll camera."と書いてあります。スペシャルイベント案内状の"It's only rock and roll, but we like it."のrockは音楽、rollはカメラのことだったということが明らかになりました。また、iPod touchにも搭載する予定だったカメラ機能については、技術的な問題で発売が延期になるとの直前情報がほぼ、正しかったようです。実際は延期ではなく、カメラ搭載に関しては、発表すらされなかったのですが。（iPod touchの場合は鏡面仕上げのステンレスにレンズを埋め込んだようになり、反射した光がレンズと干渉するのだろうか？）

薄くて裏面がステンレス鏡面仕上げのiPod touchにカメラが搭載されて、3G回線の使用は別として、iPhone 3GSと同等の性能と機能になるのであれば、是非一台購入しようと思っていましたが、今回は見送りになりそうです。

このイベントではスティーブ・ジョブズが戻ってきたこと、そしてiPodシリーズの価格が全体的に値下げになったこと、最後にノラ・ジョーンズが現れたことが印象に残りました。画像ファイルはAppleのサイトから拝借しましたが、ファイル名が"hero20090909"になっています。やはり、元気なヒーローが戻ってきたことが、最大のニュースだと思います。

改訂された日本での価格は消費税込みでもUS$1.00=¥98~¥100の為替レートを適用しています。特にiPod shuffleは2GBでUS$59.00が¥5,800、4GBでUS$79.00が¥7,800で、国内で買った方が安くなる場合もあります。（米国では売上税は州によって異なり、5%から10%が外税になっています。）

AppleのCEO、スティーブ・ジョブズはAppleの全社員に対して、米国時間1月14日に以下のemailを送信したとのことです。

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

先日（MWSF 2009開催前日）の書簡では晩春まで療養するとのことでしたが、今度は6月末までと期限を明記しています。健康に関する問題が当初、思っていたよりも複雑であるとのことです。そしてCOOのTim Cook氏に日常業務を任せるとの内容です。しかしながら、戦略上の重要な決定事項についてはこれまで通り、CEOとして関わるとのこと。

「MWSF 2009を安心して楽しんでください」というメッセージのようです。ホルモン不均衡による減量だったそうで、晩春までは療養し、この間もApple CEOに留まるとのこと。CEOとして機能できないような状況なら自ら役員に真っ先に伝えるとも。ちょっと安心。以下はAppleが公開したSteve Jobsの手紙です。

Dear Apple Community,

For the first time in a decade, I'm getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a Macworld keynote.

Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed.

I've decided to share something very personal with the Apple community so that we can all relax and enjoy the show tomorrow.

As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause - a hormone imbalance that has been "robbing" me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I've already begun treatment. But, just like I didn’t lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it. I will continue as Apple's CEO during my recovery.

I have given more than my all to Apple for the past 11 years now. I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple's CEO. I hope the Apple community will support me in my recovery and know that I will always put what is best for Apple first.

So now I've said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

健康上の理由で副社長のフィル・シラー氏に基調講演を任せるということが正式に発表されたわけです。革新的な新製品の発表がないという理由ではないので、期待が持てます。今夜もライブ報道、MacBookで読むことになりそう。

来月のMacworldはAppleにとって最後の出展となり、基調講演はSteve Jobsではなく、SVPのPhil Schiller氏が担当するとの発表がありました。

過去12年間、年初のMacworld Expoで毎年Steve Jobsが基調講演を行い、新製品を発表してきました。今年はMacBook Airでした。去年はiPhoneでした。私も年初の楽しみとして、過去数年間は深夜にライブ実況をWebsiteで読み、起床すればQuickTimeでプレゼンの様子を確認するのが習慣になっていました。

トレードショーから撤退するという決定は、その理由を知れば十分に理解できますが、Steve Jobsが最後のMWSFで基調講演を行わないのはなぜでしょうか？その件に関しては一切説明がありません。革新的な新製品の発表はないから安心して、クリスマスショッピングを続けてくださいというメッセージなのか？あるいは、Steve Jobs引退に伴い、次のステップへの序章を示唆するものなのか？

いつかはこういう時がやって来るとは思っていましたが、残念です。HondaのF1撤退、SubaruとSuzukiのWRC撤退という知らせに加えて、年末にもう一つ大きな衝撃が走るとは...
